Harvesting tomatoes at Sage Hill Ranch Gardens in Escondido

Sage Hill Ranch Gardens

On half an acre in Escondido, Sage Hill Ranch Gardens grows an extraordinary diversity of vegetables, herbs, flowers, and perennial crops — entirely without chemicals, fossil fuels, or tillage. This family-operated farm runs on a human scale, guided by regenerative and ecological principles that restore rather than deplete the land they tend.

Their produce reaches the community through an on-site farm stand open every Saturday morning, local farmers markets, restaurants, and grocery stores. Throughout the year, Sage Hill also hosts farm-to-table dinners that bring Escondido residents directly to the source of their food — a table set among the rows of the farm itself.

Hillebrecht Ranch — 100 Years in Escondido

In 1924, George A. Hillebrecht drove from Orange County to Escondido and planted his future in the soil — starting with tomatoes, then pivoting to oranges and avocados as the region’s agriculture matured. One hundred years later, his grandchildren are still farming that same east Escondido land.

What began as a single ranch has grown into two beloved community anchors: Fran’s Farm Stand at Summit and San Pasqual Valley Road, and Farm Stand West on the other side of town. Through rising water costs, shifting markets, and the pressure of suburban development, the Hillebrecht family has kept farming — and kept feeding their neighbors.
