The EGAP Mission

As Escondido grew, agriculture became less visible but remained a significant part of the economy. Avocados, citrus, grapes, nursery products, and other crops drive a silent but substantial economic engine today. Avocado revenues alone can impact the economy by more than $100 million per year, and most of these dollars are spent in Escondido businesses. However, modern development pressures and water pricing threaten the existence of this industry and the future benefits that come with a vibrant farm economy.

Escondido Growers for Agricultural Preservation (EGAP) is committed to ensuring that Escondido does not miss the benefits and future opportunities associated with its Agricultural business sector. These opportunities include attracting high-tech businesses that directly support agriculture and expanding local produce markets. EGAP will ensure that the City of Escondido and community leaders fully understand today’s farm economy, how it enhances Escondido’s prosperity, and the potential benefits of continued agricultural development in the area. We look forward to working with the City and the community on these important issues.

Escondido Rich Agricultural History

ESCONDIDO'S RICH AGRICULTURAL HISTORY

Agriculture was a mainstay of the Escondido economy from the late 19th century up through the 1950's. However, because of rising water prices and development pressures Escondido faces important decisions about the future of Agriculture.
